Dance on Screen

Dance on Screen

Dancers and choreographers, including Pina Bausch and Matthew Bourne, discuss how television has preserved the spirit of extraordinary stage performances, as well as some of the greatest choreography of the last century. Examining how dance has influenced television and vice-versa, performances shot in France, Russia and Denmark demonstrate the development of dance since the invention of film in 1895 and the introduction of television in the 1920s. Those same performances chart the rise of the male ballet star in the second half of the 1900s, capture the birth of modern dance and reveal the influence of classical ballet on the Hollywood musicals of the 1930s to 1950s.
