“She takes the words of a song and makes them poetry… hers is the voice of happiness, heartache, tenderness and fiery passion… she is what love is all about.” It would be hard for most people to live up to an intro like that, but this is Shirley Bassey, a woman whom no brass section can overpower, in a Thames TV special from 1980.
