Brenda Blethyn’s dishevelled Northumbrian detective keeps her temper under wraps (or maybe under that capacious mac) while she investigates the murder of a middle-aged woman. Bella (Jane Holman) was once a suspect in an unsolved case involving a missing boy. Here, though, it seems that Bella’s home stands in the way of a controversial proposal to dig a quarry nearby and that,
suspects, is the key motive for the killing.
Littered with familiar actors (including Daniela Nardini, John Lynch and Elizabeth Carling), it’s a typically multi-layered story that darts off in all directions before the threads are finally brought together. What helps solve the case is Vera’s talent for getting people to talk to her - even when that person has had a stroke and hasn’t uttered an intelligible word for months. However, fans of the Ann Cleeves novel on which it’s based will notice a radical departure from the original.
A murder at a remote cottage in Northumberland takes DCI Vera Stanhope back to a place full of childhood memories and reminds her of an unsolved case from earlier in her career. Delving into the local politics surrounding a controversial proposal to dig a quarry, she and her team find motives in the unlikeliest of places - until they realise that the truth could be hidden within the land itself. Detective drama, adapted from Ann Cleeves' novel The Crow Trap, guest starring Daniela Nardini (This Life) alongside Brenda Blethyn.
