Review

This old warhorse gets a remarkable million viewers or so most weeks despite the fact that (a) it airs stupidly late at night and (b) the episodes are three years old. Who cares? An instalment of SVU can be relied on to take you on a dark journey into the small hours, and this one is no exception.

It begins with a teenage girl’s body hauled from the river. Using tricks that would shame CSI (Isotope analysis! Carbon-dating crystalline proteins!), Melinda establishes that the girl was 14 and from the Ukraine.
It looks like a sex-trafficking case, then Olivia dons a fur boa to pose as a madam, and the plot takes a disturbing left turn. Look out for the cameo by a pre-Modern Family Sarah Hyland. It’s a very different role.

Summary

The detectives try to identify a teenager's body found in the Hudson River. They discover she had recently been in Ukraine and assume she had been trafficked for sex, but when they press a pimp for information he reveals he never met the victim - she was actually a maths prodigy and US citizen who attended a school for gifted students. Crime drama, starring Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni.
