The Tudors
Overview
The archetypal image of Henry VIII - bloated, bearded and bitter - is jettisoned in favour of a young, vigorous, sexy monarch (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) in this historical drama series penned by Michael Hirst (who also wrote the screenplay for Oscar-winning feature film Elizabeth). The Tudors focuses on the restless young King's increasing frustration with the rules of both Church and state, as he pursues the young Anne Boleyn in spite of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, and contends with the agendas of two very different advisors - the pious and moralistic Sir Thomas More (Jeremy Northam), and the cunning and ruthless Cardinal Wolsey (Sam Neill).
