Episode 1/4 Resurrection Men
Siobhan investigates the murder of gallery owner Edward Marber, whose body was found on Calton Hill. Meanwhile, Rebus finds himself back at police college, along with several other officers who share his reluctance to obey orders. However - as with so many of Rebus's cases - everything is not as it seems. He's gone under cover to get close to two cops suspected of corruption. Little does he suspect what this assignment will cost him
RT Choice (Alison Graham, 5 October 2007)
It's a typically, remorselessly, gloomy story, with flashes of nasty violence, and Rebus is such a self-tormenting misery-guts he's impossible to empathise with. Still, the rain-soaked streets of Edinburgh look wonderfully moody and atmospheric.

Episode 2/4 The First Stone
The moderator elect of the Church of Scotland and his female passenger are found murdered in his car in bizarre circumstances - and it seems their killer's not finished yet. However, Rebus and Siobhan find their investigation into the deaths stymied by the church's attitude. Meanwhile, Rebus's old colleague Ken Flatley fears for his life - he's convinced staff at his nursing home are out to poison him.
RT Choice (Jane Rackham, 12 October 2007)
It's a typically dark episode with barely a hint of lightness to alleviate the gloom, though I think I did spot a fleeting smile on Rebus's eternally miserable face.

Episode 3/4 The Naming of the Dead
A body is discovered in the grounds of the Edinburgh hotel due to host talks for the world trade summit. Special Branch officer Commander Steelforth is in charge of security and keen to hush up the killing, but Siobhan pushes ahead with an investigation. When a government minister is found dead beneath the city's castle ramparts, Rebus and Steelforth clash over how to proceed. But Steelforth proves to be a dangerous enemy
RT Choice (Jane Rackham, 19 October 2007)
It's a top-notch episode: even if you suspect whodunnit before the final showdown, you'll probably be baffled as to why and how.

Episode 4/4 Knots and Crosses
Two upper-class drug-dealing brothers stand accused of murder, but when the case collapses, Rebus is blamed. The detective finds himself under investigation for his handling of the evidence, but his problems don't stop there. The victim's furious father - a criminal himself - has vowed revenge and there's every reason to believe he'll follow through on his threat. In the meantime, Rebus is presented with a further two murders to solve.
