  • Episode 1/5 The Way Through the Woods

    A prisoner on remand is murdered by other inmates. With his dying breath he admits to four of the murders he's charged with, but denies any knowledge of the fifth - a woman whose body was never found. Morse's insistence that Strange re-open the case not only puts him on a collision course with heavy-handed DCI Johnson, who extracted the original confession, but also with Lewis, who did the legwork on the investigation.

  • Episode 2/5 The Daughters of Cain

    Morse and Lewis are called in when retired don Felix McClure is stabbed to death. As they investigate, they discover a link to the drugs-related death of a student. Morse suspects there's been some kind of cover-up at the college. But this line of enquiry runs into trouble when one of the suspects is murdered. Meanwhile, there's a very strange sort of theft at a local museum.

  • Episode 3/5 Death Is Now My Neighbour

    While investigating the death of a physiotherapist shot in her home, Morse and Lewis learn she was having an affair with a respected academic currently competing to be appointed master of a college. But when her next-door neighbour, a journalist covering the race for the mastership, is also shot dead, the police begin to wonder if the physiotherapist was a victim of mistaken identity.

  • Episode 4/5 The Wench Is Dead

    Inspector Morse Series eight The Wench Is Dead  © ITVMorse is taken ill and admitted to hospital for tests. To take his mind off his health problems, he begins reading a book about a murder committed in Oxford in Victorian times. Two boatmen were hanged for the murder of a woman travelling on their barge, but Morse suspects the men were innocent. With Lewis away on his inspector's course, Strange sends new recruit Kershaw to help the ailing detective.

  • Episode 5/5 The Remorseful Day

    Inspector Morse Series eight The Remorseful Day  © ITVAn anonymous letter yielding interesting new information prompts the police to look again at a year-old case. Superintendent Strange puts Lewis in charge of the reopened investigation into the murder of a woman in a quiet village. Despite his failing health, Morse returns to work and insists on leading the inquiry - causing some friction in his relationship with Lewis.
