Preparing the set of Cranford

Local lock-ups like this one were the precursor to overnight cells, and were commonplace in Victorian country towns for when the drunk and the disorderly needed a place to cool off. Although some nearby towns like Steeple Ashton still have surviving examples, Lacock didn't - so production designer Donal Woods and his crew built this one from scratch.
