This urban drama about gang rivalries and drug-related violence in contemporary Birmingham takes an offbeat twist by having the cast start rapping in the midst of the action. Showcasing non-professionals from the local communities, enterprising director Penny Woolcock (Mischief Night) provides an authentic voice for her latest collaborative piece, which traces the escalating tensions caused when a young hustler (Dylan Duffus) has only one day to settle a debt with a ruthless dealer. Despite that potentially gripping premise, the film loses its way with a meandering tour of the neighbourhood. On the plus side, Woolcock's clear-sighted enough to show the attractions as well as the deadly cost of the drugs trade, yet thanks to the jarring hip-hop interpolations, the result is about as believable as West Side Story. Woolcock deserves praise for ambition, but this tumbles awkwardly into some netherworld between streetwise musical and social-conscience crime chronicle. TJ
