Melissa George is trapped in a purgatorial Groundhog Day in writer/director Christopher Smith's ambitious and highly polished mystery chiller. The former Home and Away star gives an exceptionally haunting and moving performance as a single mother who's forced to take refuge on a strangely deserted liner when her yachting party's vessel is overturned in a storm. However all is not what is seems on board the Aeolus, as events play out like the plot of Ghost Ship but with a sophisticated Twilight Zone spin. With its epic ocean vistas, genuine emotional resonance and a sneaky change in narrative direction, Smith's film is his most mature piece of work to date. Eschewing the flamboyant violence he served up in Creep and Severance, he effortlessly marries supernatural and slasher elements to create a consistently strange atmosphere that remains creepy and intriguing right up to the poignantly jolting finale.
