The Fourth Kind

(2009)
1 star
Are the unusual numbers of disappearances in an Alaskan backwater really the result of alien abduction? In writer/director Olatunde Osunsanmi's sluggish hoax UFO thriller, psychiatrist Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) sets out to prove that it is by delving into the subconscious of her patients using hypnosis. Supposedly based on true events, the film has a strange structure, in which re-enactments featuring an increasingly pensive Jovovich are shown in split screen alongside a lengthy interview with the “real” Tyler. But the more Osunsanmi tries to convince the audience that this tale is all true, the more fake it feels. If you are a fan of the Blair Witch orParanormal Activity take on authenticity, then this may be a chilling experience. Otherwise this risible and boring tale containing no aliens, an off-screen abduction and unsatisfying blurred imagery should be considered a mere close encounter of the cheating kind. AJ
