Russell Crowe stars here as Detective Cristofuoro, a semi-retired cop in upstate New York whose hobby is Eric (Jon Foster), a young man who committed parenticide and is now newly released from prison. Throwing a monkey wrench into the works is Lori (Sophie Traub), a teenager who has become obsessed with the unstable killer. Australian director John Polson (Swimfan) has created an uneven, foreboding thriller, which takes unbelievable turns that highlight the contradictions plaguing all three of the main characters. Although Crowe and Foster acquit themselves well, the film's strongest performance is from newcomer Traub, who is remarkable as the by turns alluring, irritating and pathetic Lori. Based on award-winning author Robert Cormier's novel, the film is fittingly disturbing and downbeat, and is at its best showing the inner conflicts of people in pain. KK
