This low-key but powerful Australian revenge thriller recalls the mood and storylines of such movies as Get Carter and The Limey. Like those films (which featured juicy roles for Michael Caine and Terence Stamp), it has a magnetic central performance, in this case from Peter Marshall as the bereaved father on the trail of the lowlifes who enticed his recently deceased daughter into a world of pornography, degradation and drugs. With barely suppressed rage etched across his face, Marshall's transformation from an ordinary Aussie bloke burdened by grief to an unforgiving avenger is a revelation, though his methods of gaining information (and exacting retribution) from the perpetrators are definitely not for the squeamish. The fight scenes are realistic and visceral, but it's the edge-of-the seat tension of the interrogation scenes and the tender exchanges about fatherhood with a teenage hitch-hiker (Caroline Marohasy) that really stay in the memory. Aided by a beautifully ambient score from Ryan Potter, this is a mesmerising depiction of one man's journey into his own personal heart of darkness. JA
