Yet another Asian horror movie is given the Hollywood treatment in this slick reworking of the 2002 shocker from the Pang brothers. Jessica Alba stars as a blind violinist who receives a double corneal transplant to restore her sight, only to be plagued by visions of ghostly harbingers of doom. David Moreau and Xavier Palud (Them) provide some classy direction, while Alba is appealing in her own wooden way, but everything else has an overly familiar ring to it — from the repetitiously in-your-face spectres to their screeching sounds. The post-production re-shoots carried out by editor and visual consultant Patrick Lussier are glaringly obvious and also tend to disrupt the slow-building atmosphere and muddle the plot. But, to be fair, the original was hardly a model of common sense. This is a Hollywood compromise for sure, but a good-looking one that will work its second-hand spell on those unfamiliar with the original. AJ
