In this understated culture-clash comedy drama, upmarket art dealer Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz) gets more than she bargained for when she visits North Carolina to see the white-trash homestead of her husband George (Alessandro Nivola). Willing herself to be a good wife and get along with a family that doesn't hide its idiosyncracies is one thing; passing up a fantastic local artist who lives in the next town is another. Director Phil Morrison's debut feature has brilliant insight and a deft, light feel that few independent features can muster. He's supported here by a competent cast, in particular by Amy Adams whose Oscar-nominated portrayal of George's naive, open-hearted and heavily pregnant sister-in-law is a joy to watch. Though bittersweet and sedately paced, this gentle but perceptive family tale is an utterly engaging experience that will keep you captivated throughout. KK
