Writer/director Steven Woodcock follows up his poignant kitchen sink drama Between Two Women with another homage to British New Wave cinema. Adapted from the 1964 novel by John Braine (whose earlier Room at the Top was made into a double Oscar-winning film), this is a well-shot tale of tested faith, love and hypocrisy. Jason Merrells, star of TV's Cutting It, plays a Catholic schoolteacher in mid-1960s Yorkshire who sets tongues wagging when he begins an affair with Protestant librarian Mairead Carty. His sister-in-law (former Coronation Street actress Denise Welch) is particularly aggrieved, since she's also got designs on the shy charmer. Though the project is entirely uncinematic, it's nicely acted and there's strong attention to period detail. Unfortunately, the preoccupation with nostalgia results in a gentle and old-fashioned curio that tries to emulate early Ken Loach but ends up more like a feature-length episode of Heartbeat. SF
