Topical as today's headlines and tense as any Hitchcock thriller, director Hany Abu-Assad's Oscar-nominated and sobering drama is combustible and controversial political cinema. Two Palestinian suicide bombers (Kais Nashef and Ali Suliman) are prepared for a mission into Israel. But it all goes horribly wrong and leaves one of the men on the run with immovable explosives strapped to his chest. It is to Abu-Assad's credit that both humane and non-partisan sides of the conflict are presented in understandable terms, and further authenticity is supplied by the dusty action actually being filmed on the West Bank. The mindset of those primed to sacrifice their futures for a cause they barely comprehend is chillingly conveyed here. Indeed, it is portrayed in such a riveting manner that it proves impossible not to fall under the spell of a committed master storyteller or the quite brilliant Nashef's cool acceptance of his fate.
