After a long stretch in Hollywood, Mexican-born director Luis Mandoki (Angel Eyes) returns to his Latin American roots for this moving film, based on the real-life experiences of his co-writer Oscar Torres in 1980s El Salvador. Newcomer Carlos Padilla plays Chava, an 11-year-old boy who finds himself caught up in an ugly civil war in which children are forced to choose sides — and to fight. Padilla gives an assured performance, while Chilean actress Leonor Varela is a revelation, both vulnerable and steely, as the mother who tries to keep her son from being drawn into action on the frontline. Scenes of children being caught in the crossfire are undoubtedly shocking, but by being overly repetitive, Mandoki allows the film to drag in places. Still, this true-story drama makes an indelible impact as it moves towards a gut-wrenching finale that resounds with optimism as well as remorse. SP
