Only Human

This nifty Spanish comedy will inevitably evoke comparisons to the work of Pedro Almodóvar but, as a near-slapstick farce, it is lighter and more fast-paced. The film centres on a Jewish household in Madrid into which one of the family's daughters introduces her Palestinian partner (whom she says is an Israeli Jew). The mother is a blur of activity, the grandfather has a rifle hidden away, while the belly-dancing man-eater of a sister is raising a spoiled, neurotic little girl. When a tub of frozen soup hurtles from the family's high-rise apartment and strikes a pedestrian, whether or not this is a “murder” that requires covering up elevates the chaos to a pitch reminiscent of Frank Capra's classic black comedy Arsenic and Old Lace. Sure-footed performances and immaculate comic timing make the most of a snappy script, and, although it gets a little predictable towards the end, this is frequently laugh-out-loud funny and successfully treats serious matters with a refreshing levity. KK
