It's clear where director Jonathan Nossiter's sympathies lie in this fascinating study of how globalisation has impinged upon something as traditionally localised as wine-making. He may mistrust the motives and methods of the California-based Mondavi corporation, but he allows them to reveal their own agenda (along with those of the critics who have sought to engineer a democritisation — pro-US monopoly — of the industry). The French producers who are holding out against what they consider cultural imperialism are essentially depicted as maverick heroes. But Nossiter's documentary is also even-handed enough to recognise why impoverished farmers in Latin American countries could succumb to the Napa Valley invaders. DP
