The rise of inner-city gun crime is at the heart of this low-budget British film, in which a minor street fracas spirals into tragedy. Caught up in the ensuing tit-for-tat carnage are teenager Ricky, freshly released from youth custody, and, shockingly, his 12-year-old brother. Set and filmed around Hackney, east London, near the area nicknamed Murder Mile, this urban crime drama stars Ashley Walters — better known as So Solid Crew member Asher D — as well as many first-time actors. It's a little rough and ready, but convincing enough in its depiction of corrupted innocence, and commendable in its anti-gun stance. And if the characters and dialogue never quite escape cliché, at least they're British clichés, and not the American ones that home-grown films too often resort to. A troubling film for troubled times. DA
