Another masterpiece from the ever-reliable John Sayles, the most consistently excellent writer/director of the modern independent era. An engrossing storyline and a superb ensemble cast make this deeply textured account of the burden of history people carry with them a graceful slow-burner. Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) discovers a skeleton buried in the desert outskirts of his Mexican border town and launches a murder investigation. So begins a multi-generation mosaic of family ties, local legend, interracial romance and political tinkering as he discovers the murky past of his own late father (Matthew McConaughey), also a cop. Confident direction combines with intelligent drama to craft a breathtaking and bittersweet delicacy. AJ
