Winner of the Oscar for best foreign film, this is a delightful odd-couple story set in Prague during the last days of Communism. The director's father, Zdenek Sverak (who also scripted), is superb as the former Philharmonic cellist who takes custody of five-year-old Andrej Chalimon after his mother (a Russian interpreter with whom the impoverished musician had contracted a marriage of convenience) flits to the West. With no political axe to grind, Jan Sverak goes for the human interest angle and produces a joyous film, which provokes more than its fair share of smiles and surreptitious dabs of the eyes. DP
