Released at the time of Woody Allen's well-publicised troubles with partner Mia Farrow, this excellent New York-set comedy drama finds the writer/director/star on familiar ground. Allen is drawn once again to the foibles of the artsy self-obsessed of midtown Manhattan, focusing on the failing relationship of troubled media couple Gabe and Judy (Allen and Farrow). The news that their close friends Jack and Sally (Sydney Pollack and Judy Davis) are splitting up prompts Judy to question the state of her own childless marriage. Cleverly, Allen makes extensive use of hand-held camerawork and interviews with the protagonists to convey the intensity of their neuroses. Rich ideas and strong performances abound in a film that, typically, is piled high with wit, vim and vigour. JM
