In Neil Jordan's remarkable first feature, Stephen Rea plays a saxophonist who embarks on a bloody trail of revenge after his business manager and a mute girl are gunned down by Irish gangsters. While the Troubles and the sectarian divide are always in the background, Jordan steers a hypnotic and often surreal path through Ulster's underworld, while Rea — the Stan Getz of South Armagh — is perfect as the equivocal hero whose quest becomes almost Arthurian. The actor would later star in Jordan's 1992 Oscar winner The Crying Game. AT
