French cinema is often synonymous with moody actors gazing into the middle distance, yet Kristin Scott Thomas brings so much more to this well-observed drama. She plays Juliette, an ex-con who moves in with her younger sister Léa (Elsa Zylberstein) after serving time for an offence that everyone is reluctant to talk about. What is more, Léa's husband (Serge Hazanavicius) is repulsed and even Juliette seems uncomfortable in her own skin. The nature of her crime soon becomes clear and her motives are easy to fathom as well, so the story (scripted and directed by novelist Philippe Claudel) lacks tension in that respect. Intrigue is generated by the emotional journey, with Scott Thomas conveying the burden of guilt in a hundred tiny ways, even if it's just an eagerness to wash the dishes. Of course, repairing the bond with her sister is the ultimate aim and, thanks to a natural chemistry with Zylberstein, this aspect of the story truly resonates. SP
