Director David Cronenberg continues the exploration of violence and identity he started in his previous film A History of Violence in this similarly approachable and gripping gangster thriller set among Russian mobsters in London. Anna (Naomi Watts) is a midwife whose attempt to track down the identity of a teenager who dies in childbirth leads her into the violent underworld of racketeering and people-smuggling among the capital's Russian immigrant population. Viggo Mortensen is excellent as Nikolai, a Mob driver who babysits his temperamental boss (Vincent Cassel), while Armin Mueller-Stahl is alternately avuncular and threatening asthe gang's leader. Production values are also high — Howard Shore's score is suitably dramatic and Cronenberg's regular cinematographer Peter Suschitzky renders an atmospherically grimy view of London — and look out for a quite astonishingly staged fight scene in a Turkish baths.
