Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Johnny Depp's lovable rogue Jack Sparrow returns for more swashbuckling high jinks in this frenetic yet overlong follow-up to the massive 2003 box-office hit Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl. Only this time, it's not just Sparrow's neck that's in danger but his very soul, as cunning undead captain Davy Jones (a squid-faced Bill Nighy) and his supernatural crew emerge from the ocean depths to recover the ultimate unpaid debt. There's scarcely a moment to catch your breath as the film-makers unleash an exhausting avalanche of visual thrills, incorporating everything from angry cannibals and a fabulous sea monster to a crowd-pleasing snog between Sparrow and Keira Knightley's fiery Elizabeth Swann. Never mind that the narrative is meandering and unnecessarily complex or that Orlando Bloom is as uncharismatic as ever, it's the elaborate set pieces and frequently dazzling CGI that make this sequel such no-brainer fun. SF
