Director Cristi Puiu launches his series Six Stories from the Bucharest Suburbs with this epic but always engrossing and frequently enraging exposé of the flaws in both the Romanian health service and modern humanity. Following cantankerous 60-something widower Ion Fiscuteanu on his odyssey around the city's hospitals with a complaint that only over-worked and under-motivated paramedic Luminta Gheorghiu takes seriously, Puiu explores everything from the breakdown of community to the arrogance of the medical profession and the incompetence of the post-Communist bureaucracy. However, he laces this bleak satire with moments of genuine amusement and compassion, which suggest that society hasn't quite been wholly dehumanised yet. DP
