Shakespeare in Love director John Madden explores the shifting boundaries between genius and madness in this heavy-handed adaptation of David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Following the death of her mathematician father (Anthony Hopkins), Catherine (Gwyneth Paltrow) struggles to come to terms with the past and her own frustrated ambitions in that discipline. As student Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal) delves into her father's legacy, questions of sanity and authorship — proof — arise over a newly discovered document. Gaining little in its transfer from stage to screen, the story feels static and overly talky — its deft sleight-of-hand theatrical revelations (Hopkins's imaginary conversations with Paltrow) are lost in unsubtle translation. The most believable performance is delivered by Hope Davis (American Splendor) as Paltrow's protective older sister Claire, but Gyllenhaal is miscast as the geek love interest. Indeed, the picture is so drained of all spark and interest apart from the inertly academic that Madden resorts to close-ups of the floundering Paltrow to disguise the inherent staginess of this pretentious psychological whodunnit.
