Writer/director Lucas Belvaux also headlines the first instalment in this laudably ambitious triptych, which not only succeeds in introducing the recurring characters, but also manages to be a gripping thriller in its own right. As the one-time revolutionary who jumps jail in order to wreak revenge on the man he believes betrayed him, Belvaux becomes increasingly hamstrung by circumstance and the despair he feels at the self-seeking society that emerged as a result of the failure of 1960s radicalism. The work of the entire ensemble cast is impeccable, but Catherine Frot excels as the comrade-turned-teacher whose past loyalties jeopardise her future. DP
