Those who know Jack Lemmon primarily as one half of The Odd Couple, or as a Grumpy Old Man, may be surprised by his performance in this heart-rending drama. He plays an advertising executive, driven to drink by his work and taking wife Lee Remick along for the alcoholic ride. Adapted by JP Miller from his own TV play, the film is directed by Blake Edwards with a poignancy you perhaps wouldn't expect from the man responsible for The Pink Panther series, and acted by its leads with a force that remains memorable long after viewing. Both Lemmon and Remick were Oscar-nominated for their performances, but the film's only win was for its theme song, provided by Edwards's longtime musical collaborator Henry Mancini. TH
