The trial of Max Stuart, the Aborigine accused of murdering a nine-year-old girl in the South Australian resort of Ceduna in December 1958, proved a turning point in the career of newspaperman Rupert Murdoch. But, despite its care and muted sense of outrage, Craig Lahiff's re-creation never captures the significance of a case that went all the way to the Privy Council in London. Robert Carlyle lacks conviction as the Adelaide lawyer duelling with crown prosecutor Charles Dance, while Kerry Fox is wasted as his assistant. Only Ben Mendelsohn's opportunistic Murdoch and David Ngoombujarra's ambivalent accused ring true. DP
