Kirikou and the Sorceress (1998)

With a story inspired by a West African fable, graphics gleaned from indigenous art and a score by Senegalese star Youssou N'Dour, this is a glorious escape from the bland correctness and commercial cynicism of mainstream animation. Refusing to patronise either the community in which the story is set (by over-clothing its inhabitants) or its audience (by cosseting them from reality), Michel Ocelet's film challenges youngsters both to question social hierarchies and respect traditional values. But the infant Kirikou's quest to discover why the sorceress Karaba eats the local menfolk and surrounds herself with mischievous fetishes will also seize their imagination. DP
