The clash between tradition and progress is a familiar theme in African cinema. But rarely has it been explored with such poignancy as in this considered collection of characters and encounters from Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako. The coastal town of Nouadhibou serves as a microcosm for a continent whose menfolk are leaving in their droves in search of work, whose women have few rights and many responsibilities, and whose children are increasingly exposed to cultures the elderly regard with disdain. The largely improvised performances of the non-professional cast convey the contrasting moods and attitudes with a conviction that makes this glimpse of Africa in the new millennium a moving experience.
