Minor Mishaps (2002)

With its improvised approach to dysfunction, there's more than a hint of Mike Leigh about Annette K Olesen's directorial debut. Yet, this Danish domestic drama also contains elements of those Dogme favourites, Festen and Italian for Beginners, as the various everyday and extraordinary crises facing a working-class Copenhagen family combine both the pugnacity of a soap and the geniality of a sitcom. Focusing on the frustrations of middle age, it also succeeds in presenting widower Jorgen Kiil's unprepossessing offspring — reclusive chef Maria Würgler Rich, overworked contractor Henrik Prip and eccentric artist, Jannie Faurschou — without ever demonising or patronising them. A minor triumph. DP
