This type of love story might have worked back in the 1970s, but it's far too cloying and contrived to seduce today's down-to-earth teenagers. In her first leading movie role, MTV pop singer Mandy Moore barely convinces as the ultra-demure daughter of a small-town Baptist minister who falls for rebellious Shane West while rehearsing a play that he's been forced to appear in as a school punishment. As Moore and West struggle, it's left to the experienced Peter Coyote and Daryl Hannah to take the acting honours in atypical roles as a preacher and a single mother. It seems as if director Adam Shankman is attempting to produce an audience-friendly date movie in the vein of his previous offering The Wedding Planner. However, few will buy his patronising discussion of faith and morality or his mawkish approach to a tragic turn of events. DP
