Such was the hostility levelled at this excoriating study of French provincial life that, on the Liberation, Henri-Georges Clouzot was accused of peddling collaborationist propaganda and banned from directing until 1947. Subsequently, this atmospheric thriller, about a poison-pen campaign that exposes the malicious hypocrisy simmering beneath the respectable surface of a tightly knit community, has been reclaimed as an indictment of the paranoia that existed under the Nazi occupation. In fact, Louis Chavance wrote his initial screenplay in 1937 and intended it to be, primarily, a riveting whodunnit, which it most certainly is thanks to exceptional ensemble playing and Clouzot's claustrophobic staging.
