The Out-of-Towners (1999)

This listless, pointless remake of Neil Simon's 1970 comedy reunites Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn, who scored a hit together in 1992 with HouseSitter. They play a couple from the sticks who fly to New York for a job interview. No sooner have they left the ground than everything that could possibly go wrong (getting mugged, having their credit cards cancelled and so on), does. The two stars do their best, but they lack the desperation that Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis brought to the roles, while John Cleese's Basil Fawlty reprise is embarrassing. JF
