Tokyo Olympiad (1965)
The first Olympics to be covered by a film artist since Berlin '36 served as the subject of Leni Riefenstahl's Olympiad, the Tokyo Games of 1964 were preserved as a tribute to human athleticism and endurance in this lyrical documentary. Employing 164 camera units, many of which were equipped with especially devised telephoto and night-vision lenses, Kon Ichikawa was only interested in winners and losers if they exemplified the spirit of competition. Consequently, he focused on the last-minute preparations of sprinters, the watering techniques of marathon runners and the progress of the Olympic torch just as much as the legends rewriting sporting history. Inspirational, stats-free stuff. DP
