Dylan Thomas's celebrated 1954 radio play was a complex blend of dream, reality and poetry, which dealt with life, love and liquid refreshment in the mythical Welsh fishing village of Llareggub. Richard Burton, who plays First Voice — the narrator — knew Thomas well and had performed the play on radio. He's joined here by his then-wife Elizabeth Taylor as the childhood sweetheart of Captain Cat, the blind seafarer played by Peter O'Toole. There's a fascinating cast and Thomas's dialogue remains exceptionally vivid — especially with Burton's voice driving much of it. Andrew Sinclair's direction sensibly avoids any divertionary fireworks. AT
