Robert Altman had just made MASH and was deluged by offers from the major studios. Instead, he made this eccentric movie with Bud Cort as a modern-day Icarus who kits himself out with wings and wants to fly in the artificial atmosphere of the Houston Astrodome, then recently completed and a modern wonder of the world. Altman probably felt he had a giant symbol on his hands — an allegory for freedom — when, in fact, he simply had a Disney-ish story without the layers of syrup. Making things even wackier is Shelley Duvall — Altman met Duvall at a party in Houston and promptly offered her her first film role. She later made a further six films with the director. AT
