Not so much a nuptial mass as a marital massacre, as Robert Altman sets his sights on a high-society wedding with his scattershot technique, as two families collide, booze floats Sunday-best appearances out of the window, and skeletons rattle out of cupboards. The performances Carol Burnett, Paul Dooley, Mia Farrow, Vittorio Gassman and Lillian Gish among them are marvellous enough in isolation, but Altman's splintering style slides them into a mosaic as comic as it is dramatic as it is poignant. It makes for a wondrous marriage of unlike minds, with ourselves as bemused and intimidated guests. TH
