Unfaithfully Yours (1948)

In this highly amusing look at suspicion and revenge, Rex Harrison plays a celebrated and egocentric conductor who believes his wife, Linda Darnell, is having an affair. Laced with director Preston Sturges's customary acidic humour, it has great wit and flair, and the scenes in which Harrison attempts to humiliate Darnell add a dash of strychnine in the mix. Darnell is sublime and the dramatic swathes of Rossini, Tchaikovsky and Wagner add to the dark atmosphere. This beautifully crafted black comedy was in no danger of being overshadowed by the 1984 remake. SH
