Truly Madly Deeply (1990)

It was dubbed the British Ghost, but this romantic drama is a far more witty and incisive affair. It's distinguished by the glorious performances of Alan Rickman as the dearly departed who returns and Juliet Stevenson as his grief-stricken partner struggling to come to terms with her loss. But the strengths of this movie are numerous, most notably an emotional integrity that shines through in every scene and director Anthony Minghella's ability to inject the pathos with well-aimed humour. In many ways, the success of this film in America paved the way for a wider distribution for Four Weddings and a Funeral and, of course, Minghella's subsequent triumph The English Patient. SH
