This is the first in a popular detective comedy series based on Dashiell Hammett's characters, with William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, amateur sleuths and the epitome of 1930s style and sophistication. A wire-haired fox terrier called Asta also plays a crucial role, and makes a far more preferable child than any of the studio youngsters would have. Hammett had written a thriller, but MGM turned it into a screwball comedy, with Powell and Loy making a sizzling couple — forerunners to Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby. Their excessive drinking and other shocking habits (the characters are based on Hammett and Lillian Hellman) delighted audiences over 70 years ago and still do today, even if the pacing now seems rather slow at times.
