Helen Mirren is the driving force behind this powerful tale that looks at the Irish Troubles from a mother's viewpoint. Mirren plays a widowed teacher who is shocked to discover that her son (played by Aidan Gillen) is involved with the IRA, and whose anxiety is further heightened when he joins a prison protest. Director Terry George makes no secret of whose side he's on, but this is primarily Mirren's show, as she gives a poignant portrayal of universal motherhood. TH
