Short Cuts (1993)

Admirers of Raymond Carver, whose stories inspired Short Cuts, were less than impressed by Robert Altman's reworking and interweaving of his tales into this tapestry of southern Californian mores. But for those less wedded to or ignorant of the originals, this is a superbly controlled piece of film-making that invites comparison with Altman's own Nashville. The only discordant note is provided by the sole non-Carver story, involving jazz singer Annie Ross and her daughter Lori Singer. The rest, however, are engaging in their own right and spellbinding when taken as a whole. In a brilliant ensemble cast, Lily Tomlin, Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Andie MacDowell give the stand-out performances, but the real star is Altman. DP
