Cult director Todd Haynes always was on the cutting edge — until his attempt to break into the big time with his glam-rock shocker Velvet Goldmine failed miserably — and this haunting monster movie without a monster proves it. A claustrophobic study of a dysfunctional California housewife who becomes allergic to the chemical by-products of the 20th century, this casts an eerie spell with its hypnotic camerawork and unusual soundtrack. It's a modern-day psychological horror story that's made even more harrowing by the intense and impressive performance of Julianne Moore as a woman personally and medically devastated by her surroundings.
