Warner Bros executives reeled in shock when they first saw it, and the censor reached for the smelling salts. Over 30 years later, this seminal cult classic still has the power to disturb with its examination of the lifestyles of a masochistic gangster (played by James Fox) and a bisexual pop star (Mick Jagger) as they enter into a drugged-out parallel universe of their own creation. On the run from his own mob, Fox inveigles his way into Jagger's Notting Hill home where his sense of self — defined by his skill and liking for violence — is warped by contact with the debauched rock recluse. With its fragmented narrative, hallucinatory images and often arcane literary references, ranging from Jorge Luis Borges to Harold Pinter, this profound study of sexuality and identity remains a sensibility-shattering masterpiece.
